Which outdated technology do you miss the most, and why?
I’ve been enjoying reading a good old analog book by the pool this week. The book I’m reading is Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid.
It reminds me of summers of yore, when that’s what we did—we laid around and read books.
Our phones did not distract us from our books, because our phones were home in the kitchen—attached to the wall.
My pool is in a condo community for older people, so there are always several other people sitting around reading real books. When I walk around the pool, I check out the titles of other people’s books. Sometimes people stop and ask each other about the book they’re reading. (This doesn’t happen when everyone is reading on their phone or Kindle.)
So yeah, hardcover and paperback books. They’re not actually gone, but I’ve missed them.

They’ve never been absent in my house. I’m an old school, tactile reader who hates electronic versions. I’m voracious, and swear I’ve bought Bezos a new yatch or two.

That’s awesome. Somebody needs to
BUY the books so the authors keep writing them! (I rarely buy a book. I’m typically a library person, but that one was a gift. A nice gift!)

I buy, I thrift, I yard sale, I borrow, I trade. Whatever it takes.

But I’ve probably bought him yatches as well, whatever they are.

I’m reading a book called Arcadia and loving it! It’s on kindle though, which means I barely know the title, much less the author. I’ve written your book’s title in my list.

Awesome. I don’t usually recommend books to people i don’t really know; I mean, we all have such different reading tastes. This book is so good i want it to be read.

I read Florida by Lauren Groff last year and loved it. Same author.

The summer before i started high school i was obsessed with Danielle Steele! I read one every few days i swear, laying outside in one of those lounge chairs! Nothing else to do, and yep, no phone to distract me. You’ve given me a good reminder Mary, thanks.

I read a few Danielle Steele books back in the day. Also, Joan Collins. Definitely remember reading her poolside in the 80s.

We have a new local book shop run by a couple of young women in their late 20’s. The store runs to titles not necessarily on the best seller list and with a tendency towards fantasy. Not my thing but the younger generation are flocking to it. They run two in-house book clubs and another by zoom, and hold book related workshops three or four times a month. This makes my heart sing : Long Live The Written Word.

How wonderful! That’s so good to hear.

The detail about people at the pool actually stopping to ask each other about their books — that’s the part a Kindle quietly kills, isn’t it? A visible cover is a tiny invitation. We hoard paperbacks for exactly that reason on family trips; a physical book on a beach towel has started more conversations with strangers than I can count. Enjoy Atmosphere — my lips are sealed on the ending.
