NYT Stuffed Peppers

How do you define success in life?

My current definition of success (at age 61) is….I have no idea. The older I get, the less I seem to know.

My marriage has lasted 33+ years, which actually astonishes me sometimes. We are VERY different types of people. He cannot sit still, I cannot get off the couch. I like disco and yacht rock, he loves hardcore punk. I love to travel, he doesn’t feel the need. Thankfully we’ve always been on the same side of the political spectrum—from George HW Bush through the Orange Lame Duck (Duck à l’orange). In addition to politics, our common areas of interest include TV and movies, walking (hiking when we were younger) and of course our kids—and now grandkids.

He’s always been supportive of my hobbies (mainly music and art). I cannot even begin to tell you how BAD some of the singing has been at the amateur choral concerts I’ve dragged him to. And I try to be supportive of his healthier hobbies, particularly gardening. (I was not a huge fan of his more “extreme” endeavors like powerlifting.)

Anyway, yesterday I helped him trim his homegrown weed and he turned my latest still life subjects (colorful bell peppers) into a delicious dinner.

Success.

Recipe – really good! He used ground turkey (rather than ground beef) and it tasted great.

  1. My husband and I are the same way, differ on many things…. except politics. Coming up on 43 years together so I’ll call that a success as well.
The peppers look great. Comfort food right there.

  2. The peppers look delicious! I don’t think a good marriage is dependent on the couple liking exactly the same things. Instead, enough shared interests so that they enjoy being together. I married a nerd, so no problem there. Sounds as though you and your husband have plenty of common interests. But one thing that is very important to me is politics. I just don’t think I could live with someone who wasn’t liberal.

    1. I agree. Politics would’ve been a deal breaker. I have one liberal friend that married a Republican decades ago. Trump did them in. They’re divorced now.

  3. It IS astonishing! You two seem a good team in the best sense of the word, supporting one another yet not overwhelming one another’s uniqueness.

Every attempt to make stuffed peppers has resulted in a too-watery dish.Is there a trick?

    1. Yes, we’ve always done our own thing—even vacations. Covid hit just as we were basically done with child rearing (our youngest was a senior) and I think that lockdown really cemented our relationship for the long term. Could’ve gone either way. 😉

Re: stuffed peppers, the recipe says to spoon the extra juice over the peppers before you put the cheese on. There was no room in the dish to fit a spoon, so my husband carefully drained the extra juice into a measuring cup and then spooned it on top.
