Summer Days

What’s a book, movie, or TV show that you wish you could experience again for the first time?

I’ve written before about seeing Star Wars and the big movie musicals of the late 70s over and over again. Grease in particular was so fun to see on the big screen for the first time. The “teenagers” in the movie were a few years older than me and they made high school look like, well…a Hollywood musical. What could be better? And it’s hard to explain just how appealing young John Travolta was back in the day.

I had a poster similar to this in my bedroom (though mine was in color).

OK, I looked it up and Travolta was actually 24 when he played Danny Zuko. And Jeff Conaway, who played Kenickie, was 28. (So I was a 13-year old lusting after grown men twice my age.)

      1. I thought I heard that Travolta played Danny in the original roadway show.

I know that when they made the movie version of rent, the entire original cast, except for one actor, returned for the movie. I figured maybe that was just the way they do it.

  1. I do remember seeing this on tv years later, probably in late 80’s as a kid and i’d never seen a movie where all of a sudden they just burst into song and it confused me lol, but yes i loved it!!

  2. I’ve watched he’d it a few times but tbh there really aren’t that many movies I can watch over n over again. In terms of the musical genre I’d probably have to say “Love Actually”. The scene where Hugh Grant dances down the stairs just makes me smile every time!

      1. Oh yes, West Side Story is a GREAT musical…Leonard Bernstein is a true genius. I think the film came out before I was born, so it had an older look to it.

      2. It was originally made in 1957, before I was born but I remember it being part of our musical education in senior school and I liked it from that point on and bought the vinyl LP when I was an adult.

The 2021 version was a good remake with Rachel Zegler who went on to star in Evita last year here in the WestEnd for which she received a well deserved Olivier award.
