Brooklyn

I have returned from a busy weekend in Brooklyn—the borough of NYC from which my mother’s parents hailed. They left Brooklyn for another great immigrant city—Worcester MA—long before I was born, so I had never been to Brooklyn before. All my prior trips to NYC were Manhattan only.

We were there to celebrate the marriage of a beloved nephew in his early 40s and got a glimpse into his life there. A very urban life.

Due to Amtrak cancelling our train, we had to drive from Massachusetts. A last minute detour sent us over the iconic Brooklyn Bridge, from which we could see the Statue of Liberty, which was very cool. It almost made up for all the traffic we hit in Connecticut.
This part of the Brooklyn waterfront is called Pebble Beach. There are great views of both the Manhattan and Brooklyn bridges.

Both jellyfish (top) and chicken feet (bottom) were served as appetizers. I tried both.
I couldn’t bring myself to try the “live fish” because I was too afraid of getting a bone stuck in the back of my throat, which happened to me once as a kid.

Weather was pretty rainy so this lovely patio area was a bit soggy, but we enjoyed ourselves anyway.

We made it back to Massachusetts in much better time. (The traffic gods were with us.) But my ears are still ringing. Brooklyn was loud. From the constant sirens to the extremely noisy restaurants and bars, I’m happy to be home and can’t say I’m dying to head back to NYC anytime soon.

    1. I think it was recently alive, but the translation on the Cantonese menu said “live fish.” We had a veterinarian at our table and we were joking about whether or not he would be able to confirm.

  1. NYC is one of those places you either love or hate . I spent a lot of time there when I was young and loved the energy… but now? Fun to visit and then take me back to the quiet country.
    Great pics!

  2. Lovely photos Mary particularly the last one. Such a beautiful family photo and you look stunning in that dress!
NYC was the last stop on our 3 month road trip up the Eastern seaboard (no freeways or interstates) in 2023 from Miami to New York. I’d been there before way back in 2013 with my children and enjoyed it but in 2023 I found it a bit grubby and noisy. Maybe that’s a sign of my age but it’s not on my list to return to.

  3. Lovely photos and such a pretty dress you are wearing. My daughter lived in Brooklyn for many years, and I visited often. It’s my favorite city. I love the energy and the culture. So many pearls on the string. Yes, it’s loud, but I got used to it, as did my daughter.

  4. I’m usually one to hate detours, but a diversion over the Brooklyn Bridge ain’t too bad! Weddings are always fun. Glad you and your family got to share the moment and had a good time. Cheers to the groom’s colorful attire. 🙂

  5. Isn’t it funny. I was born in a city and for the most part lived in them. Minus the 2 years with my brother in the ultra quiet suburbia. There is something the quiet that unnerves me. Looks like a good time despite. You took some really cool pictures.
