Stress baking

I gotta say, this whole situation with the midterm election (and Trump’s plan to undermine it), the mess in the Middle East, inflation, AI coming for us…and on and on…is…STRESSFUL.

Baking with fruit from our own trees is a good counterbalance to the news.

A friend’s trip to Germany inspired me to try making apple strudel for the first time. My husband cut-up the last of our Winesap apples and we used a recipe I found online.
I have very little experience baking with puff pastry. It turns out the timing of when you take it out of the freezer is a key.
There were dots of butter under the top sheet of puff pastry, which I brushed with milk.
After 30 minutes in a 350 degree oven
Amazing. No ice cream needed.

The midterm elections have begun. VOTE like your life depends on it, because it does. VOTE early if you can.

  1. Looks 😋! But as an Austrian let me remark: this is not Apfelstrudel! This is something entirely different.😉 For a start: Apfelstrudel ist NOT made with puff pastry, but with Strudel pastry. And there are lots of others things – I won’t fo into detail 🤣 But: enjoy anyway!

    1. I believe you Andrea! This is what the internet called “easy puff pastry apple strudel.” Sry to insult the real thing. If I ever make it to Vienna, I will seek it out. 😊

  2. Baking with home-grown apples sounds like the absolute best antidote to the daily news cycle! That strudel looks delicious, puff pastry or not. Nothing beats the smell of warm apples and cinnamon wafting through the house! 🍏🥧✨

  3. It’s so hard to avoid the news Mary even here! I’ve given up reading about Mr Trump but my husband tries to keep me informed but we have got to the point where he knows not to talk to me about it and only answers questions I pose now!
I love the smell of freshly baked goods in the house n that looks yummy 😋

  4. I feel for you guys, the entire world is honestly stressed out. The mess in the Middle East has led to insane increases in prices since most of our goods in Kenya are imported from the Middle East. It’s a stressful time. But at least the apple strudel turned out lovely- baking is the best distraction honestly haha.

      1. I didn’t end up trying it yesterday because I didn’t have a ready puff pastry dough. But today I made a dough from scratch and made an apple pie with it. I’m eating it now while still hot it turned out amazing 🤩
