My husband’s new Retirement Garden (aka The Graveyard) will not sit idle until spring. With hopes for a warm October, he went ahead and put in a bunch of seeds and surprisingly, they all sprouted.

Also, he now has a spigot out there. 💦
For my friends facing knee replacement: his two new knees are really pretty darn good now. Walking is not a problem. Stairs are not a problem. I would say that this optimistic return to his lifelong love of plants and gardening has been made possible by those surgeries.

Wow!! So you’ll actually be able to eat these before winter, you’ll have enough of a growing season yet?

That’s a bit of a question. We shall see…counting on some help from global warming. But he wanted to give it a shot.

That’s great news all around! Remind me again when he had his last surgery….

One was done in November 2025 and the other in March 2026

So, six months to total recovery?

Six months to pretty darn good. There’s still some swelling and random things that feel weird in there. The doctors say it’s one full year to total recovery (or as good as it’s gonna get).

Ugh.
That seems like such a looooong time to feel normal again.

I know…but “normal” just prior to surgery (for my husband anyway) was pretty bad. You’re getting back to something you haven’t had for years and years. It’ll be worth it! Eyes on the prize 🏆 💃🏿

This made me smile so much 🌱💚 The garden sprouting is exciting, but honestly the bigger story here is your husband getting his knees back and returning to something he loves. Fingers crossed for a warm October so those veggies actually make it to the table!

This summer, I was picking up Swiss chard a lot at the farmers market. It was so good! What a great veggie your husband is growing!

Oh really? That’s the only one I’m not too sure about, but I’ve collected a few recipes that use Swiss chard. How do you usually prepare it?

We either steam it or saute with garlic. Sometimes we’ll sauté the Swiss chards with the beat stems/leaves mixed it.

Wonderful! It gives you such a buzz when you achieve something like this in the garden. Makes the drama of the knees so worthwhile.

Thanks! And yes, I’m happy for him. It sure was a lot of drama though.

lol, that’s what it reminded me of when it got installed. And just in time for Halloween 💀it definitely gives prison camp too, with that deer fence 😉

lol, you’re welcome Kathy. I just had to chase off some turkeys who were thinking about breaking in. Their leader flew his fat butt up onto one of the posts 🦃
