2046

If your future self could send you one sentence, what do you hope it would say?

I feel like I am my future self. Things are somewhat settled for me. I’m 61, I’m retired, I’m a grandmother, I’m married and I’m going to stay married until one of us dies.

My hopes for the future are all for my kids and grandkids, and for humans in general.

I am beyond horrified at what we’re currently seeing in my country…from the return of measles, to the reversing of the hard won victories of the Civil Rights and Women’s movements, to the alienation of our democratic allies over a wildly ill-conceived war in the Middle East, which is costing us all a shit ton of money and has no end in sight.

I hope 81-year old me can say something like this in 2046:

Dear Mary,

Fear not! After President Trump was found dead on the toilet by his delighted wife, VP Vance was sworn in, but lost in a landslide to President Ocasio-Cortez, who ushered in a new era of democracy, peace, prosperity, equality and optimism, which continues to this day.

  1. I hope against hope that your future self will be able to write something like that. I am hoping my future self will be able to chronicle the turning of the tide with the climate crisis and alternative energy.

    1. Ironically, we finally pulled the trigger and purchased solar panels for our house after years of debating it. Our energy costs under Trump are SO high!

  2. It felt so good to read this letter, Mary. Thank you. I’m still trying to shake the heaviness this week, pulling myself along but feeling pulled under. I need to imagine possible change and reversals of what can be reversed after electing a spate of psychopaths.

      1. We’ve gotten so used to taking in outrageous terrible news that it’s a shock when it is all-of-a-sudden more overwhelming.

  3. Ok, where do I start with my comment on this?
Firstly I definitely get your wish, who wouldn’t ?
Secondly – is she really his wife? Or is she just paid to be in his life? Or does she have knowledge that he cannot afford her to share e.g. he met her through Epstein. That un provoked speech she made about him n Epstein n that she wasn’t part of it was mighty peculiar?

Next – over here we’ve not heard of Ocasio-Cortez, so I had to look her up. I’m sorry to rain on that parade but do you really feel that the USA is ready for a female President and also someone who is ethnically diverse? It would be great if they would but ……
The feeling here is that Gavin Newsom will run for the Presidency?

Last but not least I can tell you there is always hope. It wasn’t long ago that I was writing about Trumps little brother “ Nigel Farage” who seemed to be gaining ground here in the UK. But out of the blue along came Andy Burnham and hey things are definitely looking up! The rich are shaking in their boots at the changes he is announcing. He gets social media but in a positive way and connects with his people daily, yes everyday and gives us all something to smile about 😊

    1. Great news about your Andy! It’s absolutely awful here now with what Trump is doing…a real low point in the dismantling of all the principles and practices the US was ever known for.
