Sea to Table

What’s the best local dish you’ve ever eaten while traveling?

Summer is far and away my favorite season in New England—my lifelong home. I generally stay within its six states in summer. Why leave? I know it’s been very hot here, but I’m a swimmer. Outdoor pools and oceans beckon me. The water temperature at Rhode Island beaches was 70F last weekend. Perfect.

A plate of fresh, farm-raised oysters at Westport Sea Farms in Westport, MA
Jonathan Richman—a Boston original.
He gets it.

OK, if I HAD to rank them, I’d go:

Massachusetts

Rhode Island

Maine

New Hampshire

Vermont

Connecticut

But they’re all great – in the SUMMAH.

Pumpkin spice, stay away!

    1. They gave us 4 types of oysters with two sauces and a lemon, and we definitely had a favorite type with a favorite sauce (mignonette).
And now we think we’re 🦪 experts lol

      1. Sadly, I have no idea. It was somewhere near the Berkshire Mountain Lodge. We eat out every day on vacation, unless I take a picture of the building or menu.. I rarely remember the name.
I d have a nice pic of my meal though.
        🤣

  1. Fried green tomatoes followed by a seafood broil in Gullah country, South Carolina!
A bit of a quirk of fate – last Autumn we were scheduled to do another road trip in America starting in Rhode Island, moving to Boston before driving up the Maine Coast ( this would have completed our drive of the Eastern seaboard from Florida to Canada) then across into Vermont and down through the Catskills! We cancelled it for a couple of reasons mainly associated with Mr Trump!

    1. Oh wow, that would’ve been a great trip! But completely understandable to have canceled due to what’s happening here. Sigh. I’m glad you enjoyed South Carolina. I still have not had a fried green tomato- but I read the book!

  2. Sea-to-table oysters that fresh are hard to beat, and I love that you ranked all six states then immediately admitted they’re all winners in the SUMMAH. We’ve done the New England coast with the kids in July and that 70-degree water is exactly the sweet spot. Fully with you on keeping pumpkin spice at bay a while longer.

  3. I’ve had some great meals in all of my travel… Your entry reminded me of the unique oysters that I ate at The Hourly in Cambridge, and the bisque and lobster roll that I had in Provincetown.

I haven’t been to Rhode Island, Connecticut or New Hampshire yet, and would take any recommendation that you can make.

    1. Thanks for your comment! The Boat House in Tiverton, RI is in a spectacular location. Good food and fun. Rhode Island in general is also known for fried calamari. I recommend Mystic Seaport in CT (especially its aquarium with the only beluga whales in New England) and the gorgeous White Mountains in NH (maybe an inn in Crawford Notch). Great hiking there, if you’re rugged!
