What’s a common misconception people have about happiness?

One thing I know about happiness is that it’s fleeting. There’s really no such thing as “happily ever after.” Things will change. They always do.

Here in the United States, millions had a happy day yesterday. New Yorkers reached a state of high ecstasy celebrating their championship basketball team—the Knicks. And we all got to see our inspirational former leader—America’s first Black President—Barack Obama open the new, magnificent Obama Presidential Center in Chicago. All of our living presidents and their wives were there, except the Incompetent Orange Fascist currently occupying Our White House. He was not invited. There were speeches and incredible musical performances by everyone from Jennifer Hudson to Eddie Vedder.

We got reminded of how far we’ve come and what the future could be, if we don’t give up. Michelle Obama’s speech was so beautiful it made me cry. Check it out here.

Combined with all the World Cup joy in Boston and beyond (thank you Tartan Army) and the successful Artemis 2 voyage earlier this year, I’m reminded that Americans can be happy again.

Also, I just read that the correct guy won the special election in the UK yesterday, which is also great news.

Read President Obama’s speech here. For me, the opening of the Obama Presidential Center was the real celebration of America’s 250th birthday.

NYT Cooking’s Salmon with Avocado and Cilantro salad. This is part of my eat more salad to lose weight quest. Unfortunately I followed it up with a big bowl of freshly baked peanut butter cookies and vanilla ice cream.

  2. It was so refreshing to see the Obamas back in the spotlight with their girls, like can we just keep ugly nasty DT completely out of the news?! Just for a couple of weeks at least!
    Salad looks delish!

    1. I know, it was great to see the Obama girls too! They looked fantastic.

      The salad was good. I never cook fish at home, but it came out well. I substituted spinach for watercress in the recipe.

  3. You’re right that things do change. And I think that’s what makes happiness such a great feeling. It’s such a stark contrast to the bad times, the negativity, that we treasure it so much. If we were happy all the time, then happiness would really have no meaning. Too many people mistake happiness with simply being content.

    And for the record, I thought that that was so awesome that the orange taco was not invited to the opening of the Obama presidential Center

  4. Thank you for this post, which reminded me that there is still joy and happiness to be had. Tyrants the world over stomp on joy, hoping to extinguish it. But they never truly succeed. Your description of a healthy dinner followed by cookies and ice cream made me giggle.

  7. I follow the Obamas on Instagram and so set an alarm for the showing of the Opening Ceremony on Youtube over here in the UK.
    Amazing speech by Michelle, such a shame she never wants to stand for the Presidency herself.
    We visited Chicago back in June 2023 before setting out on our Route 66 road trip and really liked the city. It’s definitely back on our list for a revisit specifically to see this monumental tribute by the Obamas to their city and time in the White House.

    1. I was thinking the same thing while Michelle was speaking. She could get elected President, IF she wanted to run. But she doesn’t. 😔
      How cool that you drove Rte 66. I’ve never done that but have been to Chicago once. I definitely want to go back and see the Obama Presidential Center at some point. I heard it’s totally sold out through November!
