Some good things…

I’m still getting over the high drama of last week which was a major paradigm shift in my family of origin, although it harkens back to something I recently reflected on as part of a Thursday Doors post (of all things).

I went to online guided meditation on Friday and it did help calm me, as I had hoped. I keep thinking of the last thing my minister said as she led us into our breathing:

“A present moment is a happy moment.”

It’s a great sentence to return you to your inhale. And then I find I just sort of naturally smile a bit on the exhale when I think of that sentence. It’s been helpful this week.

And then that same minister gave a great sermon on Sunday entitled “Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?” She is so smart and funny and very GenX in all her cultural references. I love Rev Lara! Her sermon starts at minute 26:30 in this video, if you want to check it out.

I felt so grateful to be in my church community on Sunday.

The other MAJOR good thing is that my husband really seems to have turned the corner in his knee replacement recovery. It’s been SEVEN long weeks, but he can actually walk around Costco with me now. We’ve been out to movies and restaurants a few times. He still keeps the knee elevated and on ice a LOT, but needs the pain drugs way less. (Sadly, he needs to have the other knee replaced in March, but at least he’ll know what he’s getting into next time.)

Another good thing is that we had a fun family Zoom with my husband’s side of the family on Sunday, with three new additions on the screen (my granddaughter and two other toddlers). My in-laws are a very good group overall. By no means perfect, but a solid family. No MAGA. No Trumpers. We’re spread all the way down the East Coast from Boston to NYC to DC to Orlando, so we don’t get to see each other much, but they are THERE and I’m grateful.

Also, I get to see BOTH my son and my daughter and my granddaughter this week…AND possibly all of us together on Saturday for a trip to the Aquarium, which would be a Grandma dream come true. 🤞🏼

I’m so grateful for my husband, my son, my daughter and her family, my in-laws, and my church family.

AND I’m also extremely grateful for the support from my WordPressBlog Community. I really can feel it, which is wild. Stephanie, May, CJ, Edward, Andrea, Liz, Shelly & MyGenExerLife and anyone who sent me silent good vibes—thank you 🫶

  1. “A present moment is a happy moment.” A good thing there mentioned by your minister.

Sounds like what you needed the meditation and have fun with the aquarium if that happens.

  2. I like the phrase “return to the inhale…”. Sometimes shit gets a little crazy I forget to breath.

You are fortunate you like your in-laws. I’ve heard many in law horror stories. I’m lucky I like mine, too.

Reading your posts has given me motivation to take care of my knees… hoping the second surgery goes a lot smoother.

    1. I’ve been taught to think of my breathing almost like a friend you can always return to.
Definitely take care of your knees! Arthroplasty is really not fun. Best to avoid it, if possible.

  3. Glad to read there has been some good mixed in with the bad. Now that the holidays are over, I am regularly checking in with blogging friends. Not everyday, but I think I hit everyone in a week. Hope your husband’s knee continue to improve. then on to the second one. Ouch!

    1. Great to hear from you Laurie!! Happy New Year!!
Please don’t let me scare you off from knee replacement, if you need it. The surgeon said 95% of patients are THRILLED they did it after a year. A year is a loooong time, but I do think that’s going to turn out to be true. He’s already past the remorse state and very eager to get the other one over with. I feel I can start thinking about planning a trip for late 2026 or 27, which makes me so happy.

    1. It’s definitely up and down. The Costco day was followed by an ice and Oxy day. It’s definitely the biggest medical challenge we’ve had so far in our marriage. Thanks so much for your support. Knowing that you survived it helps!

      1. Of course. Interestingly, and I note this on the chance that it becomes relevant to your husband years from now, I’d become aware that my right leg (now three yrs post surgery) didn’t fully straighten when I stand—though I can straighten it. I had assumed it was residual from the surgery. Had PT last June which built it up, but then it weakened again when I had severe back pain. After treatment, I had PT for back. When the therapist looked at the MRI of my lower back, he said the spondylosis (arthritis of spine) was the cause of my leg weakness. So helping the back and core is strengthening the leg. Voila!

I hope your husband never has this additional problem, but osteoarthritis is a factor in both.

  4. Happy and relieved to hear this lightness and excitement, Mary. It all sounds really wonderful. Costco is no small chore and a very good measure of recovery, so hopefully you two have a nice window of ease before May. ❤
