What would your life be like without music?
I love music and always have. I took years of piano and voice lessons, sing in a choir, and work for a music school.
Due to some recent hearing loss on one side, I’ve been fearing this very thing. What if I couldn’t hear music anymore?
And also, somewhat relatedly, how in the heck did Beethoven compose his 9th Symphony, Missa Solemnis, and other major works after he went deaf??
It would be terrible to go deaf and no longer hear music. But if I had to make a Sophie’s Choice between my vision and my hearing, I’d choose my vision. I think I’ve internalized enough music at this point in my life that I’d still be able to hear it in my head—like Beethoven…just not as well. Obviously.

I was having hearing issues and recently asked myself the same question. I thought about the same choice. Music is something that never leaves, ever. There will always be music playing in the background

Sorry about your hearing loss. I’m choosing to blame mine on Covid rather than old age. Lol

Blame Covid! I agree!
Fortunately, my hearing issue seems to be improving. It was the not knowing what the issue was that made me think about it.

Hi Mary,
When I was young, I wanted to ‘be a singer when I grew up.’ I sang solos through elementary, high school, and college, and had my exhilarating moments in the spotlight. Then my dream changed, which was okay, but music has always been a big part of my life. Singing, dancing, listening. I am just as mystified as you are about Beethoven. But if I had a choice, I don’t think I’d want to lose my sight. That would affect everything day to day, driving, navigating inside the house, working, seeing my family, and so much more. I think I could adjust with a hearing loss, even if it would mean missing out on music. Good question though!

I’m not much of a soloist. I really like singing in groups. I missed it so much during Covid.
