Rain, rain go away

As of today, May 31, 2025, Greater Boston is experiencing its 12th consecutive rainy weekend. Since early March, every weekend has included some measurable rainfall, with more than half of those weekends seeing rain on both Saturday and Sunday.

GenX, there are a couple of rain songs from our childhood that will never leave my brain.

The first is “Rainy Days and Mondays” by The Carpenters. It came out in 1971.

The other one is “Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head” by BJ Thomas. (I didn’t know the artist. I looked it up just now.) It came out in 1969, so perhaps only older GenXers like me remember this one. Apparently it was featured in the movie “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” but I don’t remember that. I just remember singing the song along with the radio, with the most memorable line being “Just like the guy whose feet are too big for his bed.” I always pictured that guy. His feet must have been enormous.

What are your rain songs? You know—those songs that just emerge in your brain on rainy days.

  1. Both are great songs! And thanks for bringing back Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid! One of my favorite movies growing up.

Here’s a few – Purple Rain and Here Comes the Rain Again (Eurythmics)

    1. Oh, good ones! 80s rain songs. I wonder if millennials will remember them as songs from their childhood. Im not sure if kids born in the 80s listened to the radio like we did.

      1. Interesting. I think you’re right. I don’t know if my nieces or nephews listen to the radio. Everything is at their fingertips with Spotify. They’ll never know the feeling of waiting and then finally of hearing a favorite song on the radio

      1. Off and on, yes. I’m just far enough west that it didn’t always come in well out here lol
I used to alternated between that and WCCC out of Hartford, CT. Those were usually the go to’s back then for me

  2. Bizarre! Truly bizarre! I’de just settled in to write a blog about this being our 10th straight weekend of rain. I’ve even picked the pumpkins even though they have not finished growing because I fear they will rot in all this wet. Thank you – I now have a Karen Carpenter ear worm 🙂 ( And showing my age : Sir Bobness’s ” A Hard Rains Gonna Fall”)

    1. Oh no! You too?? Too much rain ☔️
GREAT song! Dylan was a little before my time, but I bow down to all the cool Boomers popularized him for the ages. A lyricist like no other.

  3. Both songs excellent and much sung growing up in a very rainy place! Thanks for reminding me of the second, which I haven’t thought of in ages.
