OK, I know I live in a deep blue Massachusetts bubble, but I have not heard of one single person who plans to watch Donald Trump’s inauguration tomorrow.
Feelings seem to range from benign avoidance to disgust and true nausea that it’s being held on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
I don’t think I’ve skipped watching an American presidential inauguration in the past 30 years. They are part of American history. Hell, I’d normally watch for the cold-weather women’s fashions alone. The coats! The gloves! The hats!
But I will not be watching this one. And I’m just so relieved Michelle Obama is skipping it too.
My alt-inauguration plan is to go see a midday matinee of The Last Showgirl, starring Pamela Anderson and Jamie Lee Curtis, in a movie theater with my husband. Anderson’s performance is getting good reviews and since she’s the estranged ex-wife of Trump inaugural performer Kid Rock, it seemed like a great choice.
What’s your alt-inauguration plan? Or are you planning to watch?

Not watching!!! Since I am still getting over a bad cold, I won’t be going anywhere but the TV won’t be tuned to Trump.

Are you sure?? I think that’s going to be hard. That’s why I’m leaving the house. So sorry you’ve been sick.

I can feel you… For my own mental health I’m staying away from the news as much as I can these days. A quick update once a day is all I can handle… And it’s more than enough anyway.

That sounds smart Andrea. Once a day is enough.

The TV is off today. I’ve managed to avoid national news since November. Why crash and burn now? BTW, not many people can pull off the purple coat. Pretty amazing. What a sharp contrast to that hot dog on a stick outfit.

Good for you! And we don’t have Hot Dog on a Stick restaurants here, but I just looked at the uniforms online and you nailed it! 🤣

I can understand people not wanting to watch such a disturbing spectacle, but I feel we should remain engaged and witness the actual words uttered by this President. Sometimes, you catch things that may not be reported on, omitted, or even twisted by news outlets. A couple of things I noticed was he did not place his hand on the Bible Melania was holding when he was being sworn in. Also, to the left of the swearing in sat the billionaires who will be influencing the future of U.S. policies and citizens, and on the right sat former presidents and vice presidents who were looking on obviously uncomfortable and even disbelieving at what he was saying. More importantly, the applause he received from his supporters for all the threats and lies he made, is really unsettling.

I know we should “bear witness” to what very well could be the end of our country as we know it, but it’s just so hard to watch. Especially for those of us who worked hard for a different outcome. I feel many are now in self-preservation mode.
