Emotional roller coaster

I am not feeling good about the election today. The polls are too close.

I feel like it might be better to just expect the worse. Maybe we’re not such a great country. If we elect Trump again, it would be hard to come to any other conclusion. Maybe the country is deeply misogynistic—to the core. The fact that a second highly-qualified woman could lose to a serial sexual assaulter and convicted felon is unreal.

Maybe people really are only out for themselves.

Maybe it’s time to circle the wagons and focus only on the five other people that actually matter to me. Maybe I should put all my energy and resources into them.

Maybe the “greater good” is not real.

Maybe we’re divided for a really good reason. Maybe everyone who ever saw fit to vote for Trump should be shunned, even family members. Maybe everyone who politely demurred and never made a single public utterance against the rising tide of fascism should be forgotten. Maybe there’s not one single good thing about the other side.

Maybe I should cancel all these damn newspaper subscriptions and save the money for the six who matter.

  1. I know how you feel Mary. We live in a deeply troubled time. The polls have been awfully wrong before.

But I agree, it doesn’t look too good. I’m not a US citizen, but I really love the US since I was a kid, having an American cousin, still tied to the US no matter what. The division running through the US is at a breaking point.

If Trump comes back into office, who knows what will happen. Democracy is at stake. That’s not an empty phrase anymore. Voting is more important than ever. If you want to stay in the land of the Brave and the Free.

Caring only about your inner circle makes sense. However may I give you a chilling example of a country where a Prime Minister with fascist roots is in power: Italy. Day by day, Meloni tries to undermine freedom of speech, suing journalists for diffamation, intimidating judges, crippling the biggest broadcasting TV RAI, infiltrating cultural institutions to influence young people to the values of fascism.

It’s happening, for real. Making a deal with Albania to create immigration camps (they call it hubs) on Albanian territory with Italian personnel under Italian law, stopping immigrants to set foot on Italian soil. It’s troubling to say the least and unlawful. I hope this idiotic plan gets scrapped by the European Court of Justice.

How did it come so far? Italians got tired after decades of political instability, corruption, Berlusconi and thought, why not give Meloni a try. A lot of Italians don’t vote anymore. At the last communal elections only 40 something percent voted. And the ones who do vote, vote for Meloni and the Brothers of Italy. Basically a party with fascist roots.

Meanwhile the Italians turn back from politics to their family, friends and loved ones. But politics never forgets you. Result: Italy is in the iron grip of Meloni.

Please remember this when you vote in the US. Democracy is never a self evident fact, but you must fight for it to stay alive.

Sorry for the length Mary 🙏

  2. Hi Mary, it’s mind boggling how the race is so close. Our heads continue to spin. But we’ve come to the realization that there is only so much control we have and that is to play our part by voting. Then we just have to watch the unfolding and hope for the best. And praying, we’re doing a lot of praying for our country. It’s awkward and difficult because some family and friends are on the other side of the fence. One person, that’s what it’s taken to thoroughly divide our country. The two parties aren’t like they used to be. So much hate and vitriol and attacking. It’s awful and outlandish. Okay, I’ll get off my soapbox, but in the end, I know how you feel because we’re feeling it too. Fingers crossed though, and probably lots of wine of the 5th. 🥰

  3. Your thoughts and feelings are relatable, Mary, I’ve gotten to the point that I’m bracing for another Trump Administration. And then who knows after those four years the country will be more than ready to move forward in a united fashion, where everyone is valued. Thank you and many others for caring about sustaining our Democracy.
