Do something, anything

I fully admit that I have been so grief-stricken and stunned by the second Trump term, I have not done much of anything to resist it. A protest here, a Facebook post there, a small donation now and then. I cancelled my Hulu subscription over the Kimmel thing.

But the fact of the matter is: we are out of time. If the upcoming midterm elections don’t somehow curb his power, it’s “game over” for US democracy as we’ve known it. The Supreme Court is not going to stop him.

Wildly unpopular “Project 2025” is being implemented, despite all claims to the contrary.

The cost of living is out of control, with healthcare costs set to skyrocket next year, and Donald Trump is responding by declaring war on…Chicago.

Women will most certainly be second-class citizens in this far right version of America. A 100% male committee in South Carolina is currently considering an abortion ban so extreme it could threaten women with the death penalty for pregnancy loss.

Our minister left us with the following quote from the Talmud on Sunday.

“Do not be daunted by the enormity of the world’s grief. Do justly, now. Love mercy, now. Walk humbly, now. You are not obligated to complete the work, but neither are you free to abandon it.

She said that last part twice, so it stuck with me.

  1. Yes! And help support local candidates, too. We have an oysterman running in Maine, Graham Platner, who hopes to defest Susan Collins. Fingers, toes, and everything else crossed. We sent a small donation and will be going to hear him speak this month. Will see what else we can do.

    1. I just listened. She was so great. Reminds me how the mainstream media isn’t even covering the outrageous shit that’s going on for women in some states. God damn is right.

      1. I’ve listened to that song so many times recently. The administration has successfully flooded the airwaves, even the non-mainstream.

      1. I think because of the climate, people are not engaging in political conversations as much at work. I remember a time when conversations were not as toxic. You could have a disagreement that wouldn’t end up in a mess. Plus, working from home, there’s less opportunities for it as well.

I’ve worked on a few clients when I had to bite my tongue when hearing their opinions. It’s torture.

      2. It’s too bad people can’t have candid, calm political conversations at work…it would be a good way for everyone to learn and grow, but I totally get the need to avoid.

      3. Sadly, I’m guilty of it. I former coworker called to catch up. He was marveling at the high caliber, impressive cabinet of the new administration and went on about how America was finally on the right track. I threatened to dissolve the friendship if he didn’t shut the F up. I couldn’t help it. Not my finest hour!

      4. Impressive cabinet?! That’s rough. It’s hard to remain calm when you feel like the other person is living in an alternate reality (not just an issue or two of disagreement) Don’t feel bad!
