My husband and I tried to remember the last time we’d seen a gruesome assassination of a public figure. We couldn’t think of anything. We were too young to have seen JFK’s mortal head wound (when his brains went spattering across Jackie’s suit). And when John Lennon got shot, there was no video. Melissa Hortman, the Minnesota legislator assassinated in June, and her husband were not nationally known and again, there was no video.
So, this Charlie Kirk assassination is fairly shocking to me. I watched the close-up video and wow…a total kill shot. His whole upper body shook, and blood came spurting out of his neck as he went limp with the microphone in his hand. Absolutely horrific.
Even though we see it in movies and on TV all the time, real murder and gun violence is scarring to see at close range, even in a video.
Check-out Lydia’s post for a clearer understanding of Mr. Kirk’s views on gun violence and policy in the United States.

I admire you for being brave enough to watch the video. I am not. I am both horrified by the event as well as by Kirk’s views. Trump has promised vengeance. I wonder where that will lead us.

So predictable that Trump would be pouring kerosene on the fire within 12 hours of the murder.

Yes, predictable, heartbreaking, and terrifying, all at the same time. Have you heard the Utah governor’s speech? What a contrast! Actually sounded presidential. Trump could learn a few things from him, but of course he won’t.

I did. He sounded like a reasonable public official, with a very heavy (but sincere) dose of Christianity. I agree it was a stark contrast to the criminal-in-chief.

I have just found out today that it was a thing. I read an article in the NYTimes. What a time that we live in.
My Mom saw that Zapruder film that you’re referencing in a college class that she took and could never unsee it.
I hope that you’re doing ok. The violence that is being encouraged today is disturbing.

Thank you for your comment and concern. It’s beyond disturbing that we live in such a violent society.

There’s so much violence in the world right now, it’s so sad to still be living this way in the 21st century.

It is. MLK’s “beloved community” seems so far from ever being possible now.

There was genuine hope for a euphoria in the 60’s and 70’s and now it seems like we’re moving backwards.

I couldn’t bring myself to watch the video. I’m so tired of gun violence and the failure of congress to do anything about it.

Probably smart not to be watch. It’s definitely one of those things you can never “unsee.” Political gun violence adds another layer of horror to the whole miserable situation.
