I’m reblogging Dan’s review of Conclave. If you like movies and you’re not familiar with Dan’s blog, you’re missing out! He’s the real deal: a professional-level film critic with expansive knowledge of film history and the film industry. I think he’s about 30 years younger than me so occasionally I know that a film he liked is just not for me (because I’m too damn old), but I concur 100% with his opinion of Conclave. As I said in the comments, even my longstanding contempt for the Catholic Church could not keep me from this one.
And another good thing about Dan: he doesn’t spoil an ending. It’s safe to read his reviews, even if you haven’t seen the film yet.

★★★★1/2

Dan’s reviews are top-notch!

Good to know. I’m starting to prefer watching at home rather than the theater because I like subtitles so much.

I know what you mean. I prefer subtitles when they’re speaking English with heavy Brit, Irish or other non-American accents. With Conclave, there’s already a lot of subtitles on the screen due to the Italian (and other languages) spoken in the film.

We fell in love with an old British sitcom “the good life” from the 70’s when we lived in Australia (early 90’s). My young ears caught most of the dialogue but my older ears appreciate the visual accompaniment.

I almost watched this last night, but then my son said he wants to see it, so I waited. On my list and I’m fascinated at the idea of the setting. Good to hear that it’s a good film. 🙂

As Dan said, the cinematography is really cool. The Vatican, the Sistine Chapel, those rich red cardinal outfits, etc are all beautifully shot.

Yes!! Came just to say I loved this aspect, among others! Fiennes is always captivating, but he was perfect for this. Loved the red.
