Clever image & the debate

From The Atlantic:

For our October cover image, the illustrator Justin Metz borrowed the visual language of old Ray Bradbury and Stephen King paperbacks to portray a circus wagon on its ominous approach to a defiled Capitol. “Something Wicked This Way Comes,” Bradbury’s 1962 masterpiece, was a particular inspiration; it tells the story of Mr. Dark, who grifts strangers into joining his malevolent carnival. Over the course of The Atlantic’s 167-year history, only very rarely have we published a cover without a headline or typography.

My main thought on the debate is that it’s disgusting that a serious person—an accomplished woman of substance—would have to share the same stage with a criminal—a lying sack of shit. He doesn’t deserve to lick her shoe.

The fact that the GOP has allowed this is unconscionable.

Please enjoy this free gift article from my old friend Mark Leibovich of The Atlantic. He sheds some additional light on the spinelessness of Republicans.

  1. That is quite the cover—powerful, ominous, scary! One to frame, I think. Thanks for the free article. I will read it later on. Last night, we watched the whole debate, and I was so nervous when it started. Trump, inexplicably, always seems to land on his feet, but last night, Harris got to him. What a pleasure to watch as Harris backed Trump into a corner. The cherry on the sundae was that right after the debate, a very famous childless, single, cat-owning woman endorsed Harris. The cat’s name is Benjamin Button. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you the woman’s name. 😉

    1. You’re very welcome Laurie! (The article is long, but Leibo has tremendous access to the halls of power and is really funny too!) I couldn’t actually enjoy the debate—even though she crushed him—because his outrageous lies just make me so furious!!!
And here’s 🥂to the world’s greatest childless cat lady and her 283M(!) IG followers. That news made me SO happy. 😁

  2. Thank you for this important post.

I have a story for you Mary. Three days ago I went to have a nice lunch with my wife to celebrate our marriage anniversary.

Beautiful location in the mountains, view of the lake, islands and mountains. Amazing. The food and wine were delicious. So far the beautiful part.

Next to us sat an American couple with two Italian friends. The American guy spoke about American politics. He was leaning politically heavily towards the Republicans. He bashed Harris, Biden, Democrats politics and achievements.

Then he went on to bash NATO, threw in some untrue comments about the Ukraine war. Horrific to listen to, but it was his opinion, which he is entitled to have.

BUT then he said an unforgivable thing, that January 6th was just some people causing some rampage and that the security of the government was never in danger. Indirectly saying that nothing dramatic really happened.

I’m appalled even thinking about this remark. People died, others fled, terrified for their lives.

January 6th was an insurgency against the American government, instigated by Trump who should be in prison for high treason, for this act alone.

If the Republicans win, they will rewrite history, as they want do already.

It’s said that history is written by the winners.

And Dictators and Authoritarian regimes and rulers.

    Can’t let that happen.

    Democracy is at stake.

Every single American should understand this, if they cast a vote for Trump.

Sorry Mary, that this post is a bit long.

    1. Happy Anniversary Chris! I’m SO sorry that such a lame excuse for an American put a damper on your lovely meal. We never should have let him out of the country! I agree with you 100%. Unfortunately the election is currently (and unbelievably) tied. Women favor Harris overwhelmingly, but sadly men are allowed to vote here. On the bright side, we’re doing all we can to get out the vote! If people turn out in huge numbers, the Democrats will win! (You heard the good news about Taylor Swift, right?)

      1. Yes, I did. Good news. “Sadly men are allowed to vote here”, excellent 😅

Thank you Mary, and don’t worry, we had a great lunch and anniversary nonetheless 🙂

  3. Just read this excellent piece! Thanks so much for sharing. He is such a good writer, thinker, and observer. I was especially taken with this: “Never underestimate the durability of a demagogue with a captive base, a desperate will to keep going, and—perhaps most of all—a feeble and terrified opposition of spineless ciphers (“weak like a baby”).”

That base! Trump would be nothing without them, and they will be there when he is gone.

    1. I’m glad you enjoyed the article.
Do you think there’s any chance that the sycophants might just go back to being “normal” Republicans, when their leader loses another election, dies or goes to prison? I heard Pete Buttigieg interviewed and he seemed to think that was a real possibility.

      1. I think it depends on the Maga support in the population at large. Trump did not bring this on. He is responding to a strong current in the population. Alas. We can get rid of him, but they will still be out there. And I don’t know what you do about the racist, anti-everything group that wants to turn the clock back to the 1950s.
