If someone would pay for my airfare, hotels, and daily spending budget, I would gladly write reviews of my accommodations and travel adventures for free. That’s right – I’ll let you know what I think for free! (Also, I’d want to be able to bring a companion on my trips – also for free.) I’m sure Condé Naste will be calling any minute.
Speaking of travel writers, I happened to receive an e-mail with this review of the maiden voyage of “Icon of the Seas” (the world’s largest cruise ship) as I was writing this post. It’s written by the novelist Gary Schteyngart, who didn’t exactly love the voyage (as you might imagine), but it’s a funny, in-depth look at the most anticipated cruise ship experience since The Titanic.

Schteyngart’s article made me smile:) Cruising is all the rage here. The bore me to death .A 7 day cruise is 6 days too long.

That’s a good one! Travel writing would be a good gig. Where would you go first?

I’ve got Yellowstone booked! After that, Ireland is next up on my Bucket list. I had one great grandparent born in Dublin and I’ve recently developed a burning desire to finally see the Emerald Isle!

Have a great time at Yellowstone! I also hear Ireland is beautiful! Maybe dip your toe in the water with travel writing?

I live in Cruise Universe, but have never taken one. Part of the reason is that I’d only want to go with just the right person, but another is that very few people I’ve known come off a cruise feeling completely great about it. They have good experiences, but never tell me the whole thing was a great experience.

Yeah, I think one cruise was enough for me. I didn’t love being out at sea for that long. And I felt badly about the island nation we visited – we hardly spent any money there. Everything’s included, so the cruise line gets almost all your money and the island(s) gets nothing, except maybe docking fees.

I’d never considered that, which would bother me too.

Would you recommend cruises?

No, not typical ocean cruises. I might try a river cruise at some point.
